Raptors promote assistant Nick Nurse to head coach

Following the 2017-18, the Toronto Raptors decided to go in another direction with the firing of head coach Dwane Casey. But Tuesday’s announcement looks like more of the same. Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Raptors have their new head coach. But the catch is this: he’s Casey’s former assistant.“The Toronto Raptors are hiring assistant Nick Nurse as the franchise’s new head coach, league sources tell ESPN. Sides are working through details of contract now.”Nurse has been an assistant for the Raptors for the past five years. Those five years, of course, just happens to be the most successful stretch for the Raptors in franchise history. But the past two seasons would end the same way — LeBron James destroying their soul. It got particularly ugly this past postseason. So if the Raptors wanted a new voice, why are they promoting someone from the past regime? Time will tell, of course. For the time being, though, it just seems like a strange decision. That said, Nurse does bring six years of head coaching expe

Halftime score: Senegal 1-1 Japan

Senegal has been on top for most of this game, but Japan took its one big chance wonderfully. A draw wouldn’t be a bad result for either team — both won their first match, so taking four points into the last game would put them each in good shape.

GOAL Takashi Inui! Senegal 1-1 Japan

Japan’s most dangerous player in the first half has been Inui, and he got his reward in the 34th minute. Check out this gorgeous finish after an exchange with Yuto Nagatomo.

GOAL Sadio Mane! Senegal 1-0 Japan

The Liverpool star didn’t know anything about this, but it’s Sadio Mane’s goal nonetheless. Japan goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima will want this one back.

Before the World Cup started, Group H was picked out as one that could have been anyone’s to win. Still, most expected Colombia and Poland to win their opening games. Instead, Senegal and Japan were victorious, and they face off against each other on Sunday for the group lead. The game kicks off at 11 a.m. ET on FOX and Telemundo. You can watch the game online on Fox Sports Go in English and Telemundo Deportes en vivo in Spanish.

Japan had the benefit of a penalty and red card for Colombia in the third minute of their game, but were still made to battle for the entire match, eventually finding a winner deep into the second half. Senegal, meanwhile, were on top of Poland from start to finish in their match.

Sadio Mane looks like he’s at his best for Senegal at the moment, while Japan will need Shinji Kagawa to step it up a bit and find top form.
